This series contains approximately 800 numbered forms detailing the amount and type of effluences discharged into the state's rivers, lakes, and streams by various businesses in 1903. A law passed in 1903 (Chapter 468, Sec. 79(a)) authorized the department to survey sewerage and industrial discharges in an attempt to regulate outputs. In the late nineteenth century, diseases such as typhoid were linked with contaminated and sewage-laden water, and the department tried to curb epidemics by cleaning up the state's waterways.
